Major Attractions in Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls

The magnificent Murchison Falls is undoubtedly the park’s most famous attraction. Here, the Victoria Nile forces its enormous volume of water through a rocky gorge approximately seven metres wide before dropping 43 metres into the river below.

The powerful waterfall creates a thunderous roar, clouds of mist, and beautiful rainbows when sunlight passes through the spray. Visitors can experience the falls from different viewpoints, including the top of the falls and the river below. A visit to the top provides spectacular views of the Nile as it crashes through the gorge, while a boat cruise upstream offers an impressive perspective of the waterfall from below. The surrounding landscape also provides excellent opportunities for photography and sightseeing.

The Victoria Nile River

The Victoria Nile is another major attraction in Murchison Falls National Park. Flowing through the heart of the park toward Lake Albert, the river supports an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Its banks attract elephants, buffaloes, waterbucks, and other animals seeking drinking water, while large populations of hippos and Nile crocodiles inhabit the river itself.

The Nile also provides excellent birdwatching opportunities, with African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, cormorants, and bee-eaters frequently observed along its banks. Boat cruises along the river allow visitors to enjoy close encounters with aquatic wildlife while admiring the park’s beautiful landscapes.

Savannah Plains and Wildlife

The expansive savannah plains of Murchison Falls National Park are among its most rewarding wildlife-viewing areas. The northern section, particularly around the Buligi Peninsula, is famous for its open grasslands, scattered acacia trees, and abundant wildlife. The park supports significant populations of Nubian giraffes, historically known as Rothschild’s giraffes, alongside elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kobs, Jackson’s hartebeests, oribis, and waterbucks. Predators such as lions and leopards also inhabit the savannah, although sightings are never guaranteed. Visitors exploring these plains during early morning or afternoon game drives have excellent opportunities to observe wildlife in its natural habitat.

Budongo Forest

Located within the greater Murchison Falls Conservation Area, Budongo Forest is one of Uganda’s most important tropical forests. It is particularly famous for its wild chimpanzees and impressive biodiversity. The forest features towering mahogany trees, dense vegetation, and walking trails that provide excellent opportunities for chimpanzee trekking and birdwatching.

Besides chimpanzees, Budongo supports black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, and numerous forest bird species. Its rainforest environment offers a fascinating contrast to the open savannah landscapes of Murchison Falls National Park.

Morning game drives are particularly rewarding because animals are generally more active during cooler temperatures. Afternoon drives also provide excellent wildlife-viewing and photography opportunities. Game drives typically last three to four hours and are conducted in suitable safari vehicles, preferably accompanied by experienced wildlife guides.

Boat Cruise to the Bottom of Murchison Falls

A boat cruise to the bottom of Murchison Falls is one of the park’s most unforgettable experiences. The excursion usually begins at Paraa and follows the Victoria Nile upstream toward the waterfall. Along the journey, visitors can observe large groups of hippos, enormous Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, and numerous waterbirds.

As the boat approaches the falls, passengers enjoy spectacular views of the Nile crashing through the narrow rocky gorge. The sound of the rushing water and surrounding scenery make this excursion particularly memorable. From the viewpoints, visitors can watch the river squeeze through the narrow gorge before plunging into the turbulent waters below. The top of the falls is accessible by road, while guided walking routes from the river may be available when authorised. Visitors should wear comfortable walking shoes because some sections can be steep or slippery.

Birdwatching

Its diverse habitats support savannah birds, forest species, and numerous waterbirds. Notable species include the shoebill, African fish eagle, Abyssinian ground hornbill, Goliath heron, saddle-billed stork, giant kingfisher, and red-throated bee-eater.
